By Cyprien Tanguay and Joseph-Arthur Leboeuf

This 11 volume collection is essential to those researching early Roman Catholic families from Quebec, Canada's maritime provinces  or the French settlements in the United States. This collection is more more than Tanguay's original 7 volumes,... it also includes Leboeuf's 800 pages of corrections to Tanguay, Gleanings from the Registers, and The Directory of Canadian Clergy (includes genealogies of Roman Catholic priests).

11 Books - More than 5900 pages:

  •  7 vols - Genealogical Dictionary of Canadian families 1608-1890  Seven "Dictionnaire généalogique des familles Canadiennes". The entries within the dictionary provide comprehensive family pedigrees including baptism, marriage, and burial dates and locations for family members. Despite some known inaccuracies and conjectures, this dictionary has established itself as a fundamental reference text and one of the most exhaustive resources for French-Canadian genealogy. This resource includes the corrections of Joseph-Arthur Leboeuf (see part two below).  The first volume lists each of the original immigrants and their families through the years 1608- 1700. The remaining six volumes document the vital records of succeeding generations. Here is an example page from Vol 2. The seventh volume also lists over one hundred pages of surname variations and dit names. Every page of all original seven volumes for a total of more than 4,400 pages of genealogical records.
  • 2 vols - Supplement to Tanguay's Genealogical Dictionary- "Complément au dictionnaire généalogique Tanguay" by Joseph-Arthur Leboeuf reports and corrects thousands of errors and omissions of Tanguay. First published in 1957 it had more than 200 pages with another 400 pages added in 1977. This book is included under special license from the Societe Genealogique Canadien Francaise.
  • 1 vol - Gleanings from the Registers - "À travers les registres" by Cyprien Tanguay, is a work of about 300 pages which contains hundreds of facts that are historically related to ancestors. This information was collected by Tanguay at the time of records perusal for the seven original volumes.
  • 1 vol- Directory of Canadian Clergy  - "Répertoire général du clergé Canadien" by Tanguay. This work of Tanguay enumerates Roman Catholic clergy members from the beginning of New France to to 1880. This book gives historical and genealogical information of all clerical individuals and parishes where they worked. The genealogical information included about each clergyman is especially interesting insofar as many families included a member who was a Roman Catholic priest and therefore share their lineage.

This material is published in French.... however, don't be intimidated if you are English speaking. Translation is simple as there are a limited number of categories which are self evident by the content (names, dates etc.). Finding information about specific people is easy. Much of the content is organized alphabetically by surname.
