Background - Maplewood Cemetery & Beckwith United Cemeteries

Maplewood Cemetery is located on the East Half of Lot 20, 9th concession of Beckwith Township. It was originally owned by Finlay McEwen and his wife Mary McInnes. St Fillans' and Pinegrove cemeteries had already been established on the other side of the concession road when Mr. McEwen was asked to open a cemetery on "his side of the road". He agreed and the cemetery area was measured and hard maple trees were planted on the outside of the perimeter of the cemetery site. This was done to afford beauty and shade as benefitting the name "Maplewood". The first burial was Finlay E. M. McEwen in 1893. The United Cemetery Board took over the cemetery responsibilities sometime after 1927, along with two adjoining St. Fillans' (taken over circa 1927) and Pinegrove (taken over circa 1953) Cemeteries. All three are now known collectively as Beckwith United Cemeteries.

Those persons who participated in the recording, proofreading, typing and mapping were: Darell Small, Alan Rayburn, Mary Rayburn, Dorothy Olmstead, Gordon Olmstead, Helen McLean, Allan Mackey, Peggy Mackey, Diana Hall, Betty Godfrey, Katherine Ferguson, Eulalie Cox, Jim Cox, Ken Collins, John Carruthers, Dolly Allen, all volunteers from the Ottawa Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society
