Diary of Deaths recorded by Rev. John MacDonald (R.C.) 1838-1866

This book is a detailed transcription of deaths recorded in the diary of Rev. John MacDonald from 1838-1866. He was ordained a priest in 1814 and the following year and became parish priest of St. Raphael's in Glengarry. He was transferred to Perth in 1823 and stayed 14 years, returning to St. Raphael's where he stayed until his death at age 97.

Most records are deaths of people in the Glengarry County area of Ontario. There are also numerous recorded deaths that occurred at great distances across Ontario, into Quebec and even New York State, presumably of family members of, or people known to the residents of the Glengarry area.

The content of the book is organized alphabetically by the surname of the deceased, then by their given name. That method precludes the need for an Index of the deceased. However, there is a detailed Index of other people who are mentioned in the book. That means that researchers should check both the alphabetically organized death records, and the 'Index of others' to be sure that you catch every instance of a mention of persons of interest.

• Index of Other Names. This is an Index of persons other than the deceased, who are mentioned in the book. The deceased persons' data is organized alphabetically within the book, so is not indexed. Also note that in the first section of the Index of Other Names, there are surnames within boxed brackets [ ]. Those surnames were added by the author insofar as he knew the surnames due to his research but they were not included in the original diary. The main Index of Other Names begins on the second page. Four years after The Diary of Deaths was published, Duncan McDonald created and released the companion volume, The BREVITY of Father John MacDonald - Tythes, Masses, and Notes 1838-1866 which contains extractions of information of genealogical importance from the same diary. The Brevity includes more information about some people who appear in The Diary of Deaths as well as a wide range of different kinds of information concerning many others in the congregation.
