The foundation of this work is a DesBrisay essay entitled "History of the County of Lunenburg" that he completed in 1868. The essay won recognition in the Thomas Beamish Aikins Historical essay contest, Kings College. It was published two years later in 1870.

This book, originally published in 1895, is an expanded second edition of that original essay. It includes information from the original essay plus much additional information that the author collected in the twenty seven years between the first and second editions. DesBrisay was fortunate that so many early settlers were still living and able to tell their own story to him when he was accumulating information between the 1860s and 1890s.
