Background - About Lanark County
Lanark County is located in the Ottawa Valley. Surrounding counties include Renfrew County to the north, Carleton County to the East, Frontenac County and Leeds and Grenville United Counties to the west and south.
Settlement of Lanark County began in 1815 with British military veterans and 'Swiss' mercenaries who served the British army, farmers and other settlers of various vocations. Most of the early settlers were of Scottish, Irish, and English origin, not necessarily in that order. A smaller but important contingent of first settlers were from France, Germany, Poland, and Italy -- most of whom were veterans of mercenary regiments (DeWatteville Regiment) that received land grants from the British army after the War of 1812.
Perth, the county town, was established as a military settlement in 1816, becoming widely known as the "Perth Military Settlement". Other early towns/villages include Carleton Place (originally Morphy's Falls), Almonte (originally informally known as Shepherd's Falls, then Shipman's Mills in 1821, then Ramsayville, then Waterford and finally named Almonte in 1855), Lanark Village, Smiths Falls, Franktown, Pakenham, Rosetta, Clayton.

- Bathurst (Now part of Tay Valley)
- Beckwith (Still exists - 2017)
- Dalhousie (Now part of Lanark Highlands)
