Background: Following the move from a district to a county system of local government in mid 19th century Ontario, counties became responsible for recording all marriages within their boundaries. In 1845, an Act was passed which attempted to define the limits of the Counties and Districts in Upper Canada. At that time the following townships were part of the County of Middlesex: Adelaide, Caradoc, Delaware, North Dorchester, Ekfrid, Lobo, London, Metcalfe, McGillvray, Mosa, Westminster, Williams. From 1847-1851 Middlesex.
County also included the townships of the area which in 1852 would become Elgin County. The clerk of Middlesex County began a separate register for marriages in 1852. Some entries in the register date as early as 1848 since an early return from one minister included marriages from 1848.
