Background:
Arrangements for the provision of a burial ground had been concluded as early as 1842. The earliest burial recorded on a stone from the 5th Line Cemetery is that of Jane, wife of Henry Hare in 1827. The last burial recorded is that of Elizabeth (Ebert), second wife of Wm. Sample, died in 1906.
Following the establishment of the Munster Cemetery on February 2, 1886, the old Shillington Cemetery was eventually abandoned.
