By J P Noyes
This book includes a series of biographical sketches to accompany portraits of ten men who had, in one way or another, been intimately connected with the early history of Shefford. In telling the stories of these men, Noyes also shed considerable light on the settlement and development of Shefford, as well as on family members and others in the community.
According to an original letter from J. P. Noyes to Geo. G. Foster that is used as a Preface for this book, the sources Noyes used for assembling the work included old newspapers, family scrap-books, and interviews.
The ten men who's stories are told, are (in order of appearance in the book):
- Huntingdon, Lucius Seth
- Foster, Asa Belknap
- Stevens, Gardner Green
- Lindsay, Archdeacon David
- Foster, Stephen Sewell
- Allen, Charles
- Robinson, Hezekiah Luke
- Phelan, J. F. R.
- Laing, Richard Woodbury
- Knowlton, Almus A.
Though Sketches of some Early Shefford Pioneers features biographies of just these ten men, the author explains and highlights much of the history of the early years of the community up to 1905. Many references to other local people and events are included.
