By Duncan (darby) MacDonald U.E.
This is a faithful transcription of baptisms and marriages that were recorded in the original Saint Columba church registers. Of special interest to family historians is that in addition to the the date of baptism, the baptism records also include the date of birth of the child, the full names of the parents (including maiden names of mothers), and the parents' address (most). Oddly, some baptism records that include a date of birth sometimes were recorded without a baptism date. Marriage entries include the names of the groom and bride, date of marriage, whether by license or proclamation, and where each is from. A few of the entries include the occupation of the groom.

Background:
The church has been variably known over the last 190+ years as: "Lochiel Church of Scotland"; "Old Kirk"; "St. Columba Church of Scotland"; and "St. Columba Presbyterian Church". All are one and the same.
Lochiel Township is located in the northern portion of Glengarry County in Eastern Ontario. Prior to 1820, Protestants had no church at Lochiel. The closest Protestant Church at that time was St. Andrew's Church at Williamstown. That changed when Rev. John McLaurin came out from Breadlebane, Scotland in 1820. He immediately began to build a small wooden church (kirk) on the East Hill. As a result of the erection of the church, the district became known unofficially as Kirk Hill or Kirkhill. In 1822 the first sacrament in Lochiel was celebrated in the open air because the church building was not yet complete.

Note about print quality: Duncan (darby) MacDonald U.E. created the paper masters for these books in the 1980s using a photocopier. When Global Genealogy acquired the rights and republished the works in 2010, they digitally cleaned the surviving masters to the best that they can be. The result is quite readable, though some photographs and photocopies of documents are not at the standard that we expect today. Also of note is that MacDonald made pencil correction on his masters from time to time. Those are included as provided to us.
