Background

The Scotch-Irish left Ulster as a result of neo-mercantilist British economic policy in the region, requirements that they pay 10% of their income to the Anglican Church, ongoing friction with their Catholic Irish neighbors, and greater economic opportunity in the New World. The Scotch-Irish settled throughout the North American colonies.

About this edition

This Global Heritage Press facsimile edition has been published as two volumes in one. The original books contained three maps (Ireland, Scotland, and Eastern North America). The Ireland and Scotland maps from the original volumes were damaged. We have substituted larger-scale, fold-out maps to provide the reader with a more detailed view. The replacement maps were originally published in The Home Knowledge Atlas, 1891 edition. The original North American map from The Scotch-Irish has been reproduced in larger scale and is included in this edition as a fold-out in the printed edition and as a large pdf file in the digital edition.

The original book was popularly known as The Scotch-Irish, or The Scot in North Britain, North Ireland and North America
