Waterloo County is Vol. 13 of 27 volumes of Surrogate Court Indexes to Estate files (Wills) that were registered between 1859-1900. Each county has its own volume.

This volume guides you through using the information recorded in this book to help you access death and estate records of specific people. Because the indexes are organized alphabetically it's easy to locate persons of interest, regardless of the date that the Estate File was registered. Some deaths were prior to 1859.

Each entry includes:

  • Surname
  • Given name/s
  • Place of death
  • Estate File number
  • Year that the Estate File was registered
  • Some entries have extra information such as "infant' or compiler's comments.

Important note: The death may have occurred months or even years before the date that the estate was finalized. Many times the estate of the deceased may not have been settled until the death of a spouse.

Next steps - Estate File:

After you use this index to locate a person's Estate File, you will find a bounty of detailed information in the Estate File about the deceased and their heirs. The Surrogate Court used documents assembled in the Estate File to disperse the deceased's estate, whether he/she died with (testate) or without (intestate) a Will. Because of that, accuracy and detail were essential. The following is usually included in an Estate File:

  • Petition for Probate (with Will) or Administration (without Will)
  • Original Will
  • Executors' or administrators' oaths
  • Inventory of assets of the deceased
